Dr Moreton is currently working with three Councils on the north east fringe of Melbourne: Yarra Ranges, Maroondah and Knox City Councils. Together they are addressing the challenging issues of how to attract, develop, retain and activate an emergency management workforce. Emergency management staff from these Councils are developing an Emergency Management Workforce Strategy and a complementary Emergency Management Workforce Plan. This project commenced in August 2018 and will continue until later in the year. The challenges inherent in this project apply to Councils across Australia: how to ensure that the workforce (both paid and volunteer) have the knowledge and the skills and can activate quickly and effectively if an emergency affects the local area. This is no small task and it is a pleasure to support the Councils to address the challenge.
